Acupuncture and Chiropractic for Prenatal and Postnatal Care
Did you know that acupuncture and chiropractic have an array of benefits for both prenatal and postnatal care?
Let’s start with prenatal…
PRENATAL CARE AND CHIROPRACTIC WITH THE WEBSTER TECHNIQUE:
Are you experiencing back pain, leg pain, pelvic pain, or a baby in the breech position? The Webster Technique is an adjustment technique utilized by chiropractors to help with all of these issues.
What is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a type of hands-on therapy to address imbalances in pelvic alignment to improve pelvic mobility in order to improve the chances of having a seamless and uncomplicated delivery. It is aimed at treating not only pelvic bone alignment but can treat round ligament tension and pubic region pain. The primary goal of the technique is to make more room in the pelvis, which then frees up space in the uterus, ultimately aiding with labor and delivery.
You should consider the Webster Technique if you have a breech baby (feet-first or bottom down presentation), have a history of breech babies, or have other concerns with your sacrum or pelvis during pregnancy. Many pregnant people will seek the care of a Webster certified chiropractor to help with relief of prenatal aches and pains in the lower back, pelvis, hips and legs.
*note, as a chiropractor we will not try to turn your baby during the appointment, rather we will make adjustments to create more space in the pelvis so your baby can more freely move into an optimal position on their own.
PRENATAL CARE AND ACUPUNCTURE:
With a trained professional, acupuncture is safe and painless during pregnancy and a great way to navigate through the possibly uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms.
Acupuncture during pregnancy can:
alleviate nausea and vomiting
alleviate pain, stress, depression
assist with general pain and discomfort
correct breech position
reduce breast tenderness
reduce fatigue
reduce headaches
reduce heartburn
reduce pelvic discomfort
treat constipation / hemorrhoids
treat low back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain
— It can also help with labor induction!
LABOR INDUCTION AND ACUPUNCTURE:
Past your due date? Uncomfortable, can’t sleep, ready to meet your baby? We got you, acupuncture for labor induction is a perfect option. Once your pregnancy is to term and you have been cleared by your birthing professional to start acupuncture for labor induction, you’re good to go!
A study conducted at the University of North Carolina that utilizing acupuncture for labor induction resulted in patients being more likely to go into labor without medication.
At Advanced OC Wellness, we see a lot of patients who use acupuncture to successfully induce labor.
Now for postnatal care…
POSTNATAL CARE AND ACUPUNCTURE:
Acupuncture post childbirth can help with a variety of issues. Although the pregnancy is over, this doesn’t mean that the body is fully adjusted, and there are still a lot of changes happening. Once you’ve delivered your baby, you will be tasked with carrying, feeding and lifting the baby - who will continuously be growing heavier! This puts a lot of pressure on your back, neck and shoulders postpartum while you are still healing and hormones are still balancing out after pregnancy.
Luckily, acupuncture can help with:
insufficient lactation
mastitis
urinary incontinence
fatigue + exhaustion
pelvic pain and recovery after C section
constipation and hemorrhoids
postpartum depression and anxiety
night sweats / hormonal imbalances
uterine bleeding
promote relaxation / reduce stress
heal and rejuvenate from the physical birthing process
getting the body back into balance
create time and space for the new mom to heal
Another great tool for new moms and chiropractic care…
POSTNATAL AND CHIROPRACTIC:
Pregnancy denotes a great deal of hormonal and physical changes, which some women have a hard time adjusting to, and then bouncing back from. It is normal to need some extra care postpartum, and working with a chiropractor is another great way to get some TLC.
Some common experiences postpartum are:
loosened ligaments
pinched nerves
back pain
bones that have spread
changes in weight distribution
changes in posture
shifts in balance
hormonal peaks and valleys
The hip bones are also an area of concern postpartum for new moms. Your chiropractor will also focus on this area as well as treatment of the spine which contributes to the rehabilitation of the entire body. Postpartum pain can be helped with chiropractic, making time for you and focusing on your rehabilitation will help you feel back to normal sooner than later so you can be the best parent you can be!
